A 65-year-old man convicted of raping a 10-year-old girl living in the neighborhood in Kanpur has been sentenced to 18 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Special Judge POCSO Act. Along with this, a fine of 30 thousand rupees has also been imposed. Half of the fine will be given to the victim.
A ten-year-old minor resident of Juhi area had gone to collect goods near the house on July 27, 2013, at around eight o'clock. At the same time, the neighbor Banwari Lal took her to the ruins after seducing her and raped her. Hearing the screams of the minor, his mother and the neighbors had gathered.
The mother had lodged a report at the Juhi police station. ADGC Sushil Kumar Verma said that eight witnesses including the victim, her mother were presented in the court. The court held that no mother can ruin the life of her daughter and family to implicate the accused. On the other hand, considering the rape of a minor as a heinous crime, the defense's appeal of mercy on the old age of the accused was also rejected by Special Judge POCSO Act Rajveer Singh.
