The party has criticized social media site Twitter for temporarily suspending the Twitter account of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and accused it of acting at the behest of the Centre.
The Congress on Monday hit out at the microblogging site after it temporarily shut down Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account and deleted a tweet. The party accused Twitter of adopting a double stance and said it was violating the freedom of expression as per the Modi government's decree. The party also claimed that the INC-TV Twitter handle was also suspended on Monday morning.
This move of Twitter was also condemned in the meeting of General Secretaries of Congress party held on Sunday evening and it was decided that the matter will be taken up at all levels. Regarding this, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal said that the issue of temporary suspension of Twitter account of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi was discussed in the meeting of General Secretaries, in-charge and PCC (State Congress Committee) Presidents.
The opposition party on Sunday alleged that Twitter acted in haste due to pressure from the Indian government. It had said that it was selective of Twitter to delete Rahul Gandhi's tweet and suspend his account for posting pictures of the nine-year-old rape victim's family members after meeting her, as there was an issue against some other handles posting similar pictures.
